if only it could happen

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 21 December 2006 02:53 (A review of Timeline)

This is another book that I listened to as an audiobook first, then picked up to "really" read. I thought it would make a great movie, then found out that one was already made. That will be three ways in which I can try this book out. Not sure how the movie is, but I'm willing to find out.

not a grammar snob, but...

I liked this book, because I like learning about languages. Does that make me weird? Yes, it probably does. If you want to get a better handle on English, you should check this out.

one of his stranger works

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 21 December 2006 02:45 (A review of The Big U)

It's a good book, and one of Neal Stephenson's stranger works. There's something in the way he leads you along the story that draws you in, and just as you're thinking that it's a pretty straightforward sci-fi book, BAM! You're reading about the giant... well, you'll have to read about it.

read it in high school, still liked it

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 21 December 2006 02:42 (A review of To Kill a Mockingbird)

This is one of the few books that I "had to" read in school that I liked. It's a fast read and I want to get a copy of it to re-read. Maybe I'll pick up the movie too...

second foray into gibson

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 21 December 2006 02:19 (A review of Neuromancer)

This was my second William Gibson book (after 'Pattern Recognition'), and I actually listened to it as an audiobook first (I have a long work commute). I'm now hooked, and I can't wait to read more of his stuff...

fear and awesomeness

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 21 December 2006 02:11 (A review of Prey)

I like that there's a chance that this could be happening, but at the same time, I'm glad to know it's a work of fiction. This could easily be made into a movie (much like a lot of his books).

nice sleeve.

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 20 December 2006 03:21 (A review of Altered Carbon)

It's far future technology, but somehow I can see it happening sooner than later. You can have yourself in a new body almost whenever you want, and you could get into that body from across... well, the planet, the solar system, the galaxy - you just need to know the right people.

Takeshi Kovacs is a great character, and Morgan does a great job in building him into a believable person (in whatever form he's taking).

i keep reading it.

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 20 December 2006 03:19 (A review of Cryptonomicon)

I've read this about four times now, and I'm just realizing that it's been too long since I've read it. This is a great book, and spans WWII through modern day. There's cryptography, travel, military, technology, insiders, outsiders, the Mob, the Yakuza, and a whole lot more. Try it, you'll like it.

the CLI is great.

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 20 December 2006 03:17 (A review of In the Beginning...was the Command Line)

It's about tanks and cars and dealerships... in analogy form. Read it and see another way of looking at the technology out there. Even if this is a little dated now, it's still pretty much right on in describing the "big three" of operating systems out there.

reads like his show

Posted : 2 years, 11 months ago on 15 December 2006 11:53 (A review of Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly)

If you get the chance to read this *and* watch his show (No Reservations), do it. He writes just like he speaks on the show, including the honesty, sarcasm, and dry humor.
